Did you know your baby’s sleeping position can give you clues about whether they’re cold?
Now, as always … every baby is different. As with any information shared on P2B platforms, this information is generalized and may or may not suit, or meet your experiences or paretning style. The information is just some food for thought
But over the years, these are some common patterns I’ve seen that can help guide you when reviewing your little one’s layers overnight.
Flat on their back (or tummy once rolling)
✔ Usually a good sign
✔ Comfortable temperature
✔ Sleeping well
Moving around the cot / on the lean
→ Often a little cold
→ Your baby may be trying to find warmth or a comfortable position
Bum in the air / arms tucked under body
→ Often cold
→ Babies naturally try to conserve warmth this way
Noisy, constanly grunting and goaning. Often mistaken for colic or reflux or ‘needing to poop’
→ Often a little cold
→ Babies naturally move to keep themselves warm
Pressed against the cot rails / head in the corner of the cot
→ Usually very cold
→ Your baby is trying to find warmth and security
Early morning wakes (if not for a feed)
→ Usually very cold
→ Remember… the coldest part of the night is usually 3–5am
Waking up with a poop (if not feeding overnight)
→ Usually very cold
→ Their body is activiated to keep warm
This time of year can be tricky…
Warm days
Cool nights
Cold early mornings
P2B recommendation:
Dress your little one for the coolest part of the night, not bedtime temperature. Use the fan or AC on going down to help keep cooler with the extra layer(s). turn the fan or AC off when you go to bed. Or if neededing overnight feeds, add the layers at the feed ie: change the TOG rating bag to a warmer one or add a blanket
Sometimes sleep disruptions aren’t routine…
Sometimes it’s simply temperature.
Just something to keep in mind as the seasons start to change
