Plagiocephaly – Flat Head Syndrome
Flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly) — simple ways to help prevent it 🤍
Flat head syndrome affects around 1 in 10 babies, but the good news is that early awareness and small changes can make a big difference.
Here are some gentle P2B tips to support healthy head shape development:
✨ 1. Alternate head position at sleep time
Always follow Safe Sleep guidelines and place baby on their back. Notice which way their head turns — and next sleep, gently encourage the opposite side. Young babies spend a lot of time asleep, so variety helps support even head growth.
✨ 2. Look at your nursery layout
Babies often turn toward doorways, light or activity. Try changing the cot direction or alternating which end you place baby’s head to encourage movement both ways.
✨ 3. Check in with your GP or child health nurse
If your baby strongly prefers one side regardless of repositioning, it’s worth seeking professional advice.
✨ 4. Consider a Paediatric Physiotherapy review
A paediatric physio can assess for things like neck muscle tightness and guide you through gentle exercises if needed.
✨ 5. Adjust the play space
Place toys and interaction on the less-favoured side to encourage baby to turn their head and explore new movements.
✨ 6. Prioritise tummy time (or side-lying play)
Babies should always sleep on their backs — but when awake, give them plenty of supervised tummy time, cuddles upright, or time in a carrier. This strengthens muscles and reduces pressure on the back of the head. If tummy time isn’t a favourite yet, try side-lying play and join them on the floor to encourage engagement.
✨ 7. Limit prolonged time in containers
Try to reduce extended periods in rockers, swings, prams and car seats when possible.
Small, consistent changes can support strong development — and as always, speak with your health professional if you have concerns
