Nipple Shields

P2B visits many homes postnatally and often sees mums using nipple shields. While they can sometimes be a temporary support for sore or cracked nipples, they may only mask the underlying issue — usually attachment and positioning.

Pain, nipple damage or discomfort during feeding is a sign that something needs further attention. Even if an attachment looks good to others, your experience matters most. If it hurts — it’s worth exploring why.

Things to keep in mind when using nipple shields:
• Feeds may take longer, as shields can slow milk flow
• If attachment remains poor, milk intake may be reduced
• Ongoing shield use can sometimes impact milk supply

✨ Gentle tips to support breastfeeding:
• Increase skin-to-skin contact during and before feeds
• Hold your baby skin-to-skin between your breasts and allow them to instinctively find the nipple
• Express a few drops of breastmilk onto your nipple just before feeding to encourage interest and flow

If you’re currently using nipple shields, reaching out for personalised support can make a big difference. Consider contacting your child health nurse, midwife, a lactation consultant, the Australian Breastfeeding Association or Parents 2 B for guidance.

✨ Your comfort and confidence matter — feeding shouldn’t be painful
