A true “first roll” is when your baby moves from their back onto their belly.

Rolling is a beautiful milestone that reflects growing strength, coordination and healthy development. Most babies begin rolling from back to belly around 4 months of age — some earlier, some later — and that variation is completely normal.

You may notice your little one rolling from tummy to back during tummy time in the early weeks. This often happens because of the weight of their head and body, and doesn’t necessarily mean they are developmentally ready for independent rolling just yet.

While this stage is exciting, it’s important to remember that early tummy-to-back rolls do not automatically mean you need to stop swaddling. The key change comes when baby shows signs of rolling from back to belly.

Red Nose guidance when baby starts rolling:

✔️ Always place baby on their back to sleep, then allow them to find their own sleep position.
✔️ Stop wrapping once baby shows signs they are beginning to roll (often between 4–6 months). Consider arms-out once the startle reflex fades around 3 months.
✔️ Transition from a bassinette to a cot when rolling signs begin.
✔️ Offer plenty of supervised tummy time while awake to build strong neck and upper body muscles.
✔️ Consider a safe infant sleeping bag instead of wrapping.
✔️ Avoid devices designed to keep baby in a specific sleep position — these are not recommended.
