Natural Pain Relief in Labour – The Gate Control Theory!
Did you know combs and banksia pods have been used for centuries as natural comfort tools during labour?
To understand why they can help, we need to look at the Gate Control Theory of Pain — the idea that the brain can’t fully focus on multiple sensations at once. When a non-painful sensation is introduced, it can help “close the gate” to pain signals travelling to the nervous system.
The teeth of a comb — or the spikes of a banksia pod — apply gentle acupressure to the palm of the hand. This creates a new point of focus for the brain, offering distraction and support through contractions.
✨ How to use it:
When you feel a contraction building, close your hand around the comb or pod. Apply as much or as little pressure as feels right for you and allow the texture to press into your palm.
The most effective points are often along the creases where the fingers meet the palm — but any firm pressure can provide grounding and comfort during labour.
Personally, I love the banksia pod because it offers multiple acupressure points and a beautiful natural texture.
For my P2B mums preparing for a vaginal birth, I gift a banksia pod to use as part of their labour toolkit.
Side note: I’ve been finding my banksia pods at Paradise Point (towards the Sovereign Island end) if you’re on the hunt
