Baby gates and stairs! Food for thought
Let’s talk safety gates & stairs… some food for thought from P2B
I visit many homes where safety gates are used — and they can be a great tool to help keep little ones safe. Today I wanted to highlight an important safety consideration when using gates around stairs.
Most safety gates fall into two main categories: pressure-mounted and hardware wall-mounted.
✨ Pressure-mounted gates
These are quick to install and easy to remove. They tighten between two solid surfaces, which makes them useful for doorways or blocking off rooms on flat ground.
However, they are not designed to withstand strong pressure and are not recommended for the top of stairs. If a child leans or pushes against one, there is a risk it could slip and create a fall hazard.
✨ Hardware wall-mounted gates
These are fixed securely with screws into a solid wall or post. When installed correctly, they offer a more stable barrier and are better suited for higher-risk areas such as stairs, fireplaces and some kitchen spaces.
Types of recommended top-of-stair gates would be wall-mounted styles (not pressure-mounted). Examples only — I am not recommending any particular brands, just showing the style:
• Dreambaby Retractable Gate (hardware mounted)
• Lindam Numi Aluminium Gate
(or similar wall-mounted designs)
Other factors to consider when choosing a gate:
• Many gates have a floor bar — this can become a trip hazard. For the top of stairs, consider a retractable gate with no floor bar or one with a low-profile, chamfered edge.
• Think about whether you need the convenience of opening the gate with one hand while holding your little one.
• Avoid gates with a fixed horizontal bar across the bottom — these can increase tripping risk when opened.
• Pet gates are not a suitable substitute for child safety gates, as they are not designed or tested for infant/toddler safety.
✨ The takeaway?
Pressure-mounted gates can work well for low-risk spaces, but for the top of stairs, a properly installed wall-mounted gate is the safer option.
Every home is different — always follow manufacturer instructions and choose a setup that best supports your child’s safety
