Been out & about and now have an overtired baby?
I do love a routine but in the same breath life happens. You can not be home for all of your baby’s sleep!
A very common scenario:
Parents have been out (aka having a life) and their little one misses their sleep or just powernaps.
When they get home they cannot settle them!
Insert an even more overtired baby and very anxious parents.
What should you do in this scenario?
What most parents do is, panic and subsequently rush through the bedtime routine because their little one ‘needs to go to sleep’.
Believe it or not, this is the WORST action a parent can take.
If your little one is overtired, they will need a LONGER winddown.
You need to slow everything down to help physically wind their little bodies down. You know when your baby is overtired; they are irritable, jerky, cry and are very unsettled.
Rushing through the bedtime routine generally elevates this state.
Here are some very simple techniques that are very effective when dealing with an overtired little one:
Slow the routine down…

🥰 Cuddle 10 minutes longer
🤱If you are swaddling – double swaddle
🌑 Rather than the dull room (we all know I hate a pitch black room!) – make it a little darker if you can.
🔊White noise for that sleep, or turn the volume up a little if it is already in play
