Solids and when to start them seems to be huge debatable topic amongst parents.
So today I would like to share my opinion on the topic!
Every baby develops differently so there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to the ‘best’ time to introduce solids. It’s like rolling, sitting and walking – they all get their in their own time.
Not before 4 months and around 6 months is the current World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation.
You should NEVER introduce solids before 4 months unless under medical supervision.
The latest research from WHO states delaying the introduction of solids may result in the baby not getting enough nutrients and is also indicating that delaying solids may increase the possibility of allergies.

Signs your baby is ready for solids include when your baby:
1. has good head and neck control and can sit upright when supported
2. shows an interest in food – for example, by looking at what’s on your plate
3. reaches out for your food
4. opens his mouth when you offer him food on a spoon.
P2B recommends a little bit of both – parent lead and baby lead weaning. It’s the best of both worlds.
Through this approach your baby gets to idea of ‘being’ feed and also the opportunity to learn how to feed ‘themselves’ by playing with, learning textures, grasping the food, bringing it to it’s mouth and then biting, sucking, chewing and then swallowing (obviously not straight up) – a life skill!
Introducing texture as soon as your baby is able is also important developmentally.
If you are worried your baby is not ready for solids, they are gagging or not tolerating textures then it is essential that you have your baby medically reviewed. GP, Pediatrician, Speech Therapist, Dietitian .. there are many health professionals that can help you maneuver your way through the solids stage.
Giving your baby solids should not be a stressful event. They will all get there – some quicker and some slower than others.
